Consensus rift causing public discontentPolls conducted by Taiwan media show that around half of respondents are dissatisfied with Tsai Ing-wen's first 100 days in office and mainland experts said that Tsai's failure to recognize the 1992 Consensus and her "foreign policies" have added to discontent.

According to a poll released by Taiwan-based think tank the Taiwan Style Foundation Jesse James Jersey , 41.2 percent of respondents said they were dissatisfied with Tsai's performance, while the figure in a poll conducted by Taiwan-based Apple Daily was 50.49 percent.

In response to the newest polls, "Presidential Office" spokesman Alex Huang said the office will refer to the survey results and promised that the new "government" would do what it can to respond to the people's expectations, China Post reported.

In an interview with SET News, Tsai said that the administration is "experiencing adjustments and something is different from the 'election' period Anthony Chickillo Jersey ," and she regards the drop of support as "ok and normal."

No apology

Jin Yi, an expert at the Institute of Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times that 100 days may be too short to evaluate political performance but are enough to reveal Tsai's governing style, which may cause Taiwan to decline.

According to a July Washington Post interview, when asked whether President Xi Jinping has a certain deadline by which he wants Tsai to agree to the 1992 Consensus Mike Hilton Jersey , Tsai responded, "It isn't likely that the government of Taiwan will accept a deadline for conditions that are against the will of the people."

Tsai's remarks were believed by experts to be a rejection of the 1992 Consensus, with Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, telling the media in July that "only by sticking to the 1992 Consensus and its core meaning - that both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one and the same China - can the two sides ensure the peaceful and stable development of cross-Straits ties."

Jin said Tsai has disappointed many people by failing to fulfill her promise to maintain cross-Straits relations Joe Haden Jersey , which has contributed in a decline in numbers of mainland tourists heading to the island, damaging the tourism and catering industry in Taiwan.

Some 300,000 mainland tourists visited Taiwan in July, down 15 percent from the same period last year. Mainland tourists makes up 40 percent of the number of tourists who visit the island every year, the Straits Times reported.

Yang Lixian Tyson Alualu Jersey , deputy secretary-general of the National Society of Taiwan Studies in Beijing, told the Global Times on Friday that Tsai has evaded questions on cross-Straits ties, leading to the suspension of a variety of communication mechanisms.

Tsai's recent moves, including offering no apology to mainland tourists who were killed in a bus accident, reveal her pro-independence views Javon Hargrave Jersey , Yang added.

Twenty-three tourists and a tour guide from the Chinese mainland were killed in July when their tour bus crashed into a barrier on a highway and caught fire near Taiwan's Taoyuan Airport. Some mainlanders were angered when Tsai did not respond to the deaths of the mainland tourists but dedicated an elegiac couplet to a Taiwan tour guide who also died in the accident.

Social division

Tsai's pro-Japan and pro-US policies, including importing food from the area affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, staging no protests when Taiwan fishermen were detained by Japan and failing to pay a visit to Taiping island to demonstrate Chinese sovereignty over the region, have hurt Taiwan's interests and bred discontent, according to an article released on Taiwan.

Aside from cross-Straits and "foreign" policies Sean Davis Jersey , mistakes involving officials from Tsai's administration and military officers, including the accidental firing of an anti-ship missile from a Taiwan patrol boat toward the mainland, have eroded public trust in the government, said Jin.

Jin said that Tsai's policies on dealing with disputes between the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), have deepened social tension.

The DPP has proposed a bill which would allow for the establishment of a cabinet committee to investigate and recover ill-gotten party assets. The committee would have the power to ask groups or individuals to submit their accounts and other documents for review.

KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu said in a press conference in July that the bill would be "a serious setback to Taiwan's democracy" if it was passed.
